In addition to completing four years of dental school, a specialist in orthodontics has also completed an additional accredited orthodontic residency program for an additional 3 years full-time with 4000+ hours of specialty training, specifically in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics where they learn the skills required to manage tooth movement (orthodontics) and to guide facial development (dentofacial orthopedics). Furthermore, to gain a license as a specialist in orthodontics they must meet the highest level of qualifications, including the successful completion of the National Dental Specialty Examinations administered by the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
Not only is an orthodontist highly specialized in improving your smile and tooth-related malalignment, they are also trained in diagnosing and treating disturbances in jaw growth and facilitating proper dental and facial development.
